Connecting your luggage to your smartphone is the way of the future, but the price of an innovative smart bag today may be too steep for some travelers. Now they can get a taste of smart technology for less than $5.
Luggage and travel goods retailer eBags launched a new product called the eBags Connected Luggage Tag that helps travelers reconnect with their lost luggage. While these tags don’t contain advanced tracking features found in many smart bags, they can be programmed via a smartphone app. Owners input their name, contact information, and current location, which all gets stored in the cloud and can be updated anytime.
By using cloud-based technology, the tags help preserve travelers’ privacy. Unlike traditional luggage tags, which display contact information on them, the eBags Connected Luggage Tag displays a QR code and URL. A person such as an airline employee or taxi driver can contact the bag’s owner by scanning the QR code or accessing the URL.
The eBags app is free for Apple and Android devices. Once a user downloads the app, they register their tag and enter their contact information, then link the tag to their bag by scanning the QR code, tapping the chip on an NFC-enabled phone, or entering the tag ID listed on the tag. If their bag goes missing, they open the app to mark it as lost and update their contact information.
The eBags Connected Luggage Tag retails for $4.95 at the eBags website and comes in 14 designs that feature images of Machu Pichu, the Great Wall, and other notable landmarks. The company says it is already one of the fastest adopted products in its history.
Smart technology is one of the hottest trends in the luggage industry. The leader in the segment, Bluesmart, makes a feature-packed carry-on that sells for $399. At $4.95, the eBags Connected Luggage Tag is perhaps the most affordable product containing smart technology. Another attachable product called AirBolt is a travel lock that retails for around $50 and includes more advanced tracking capabilities and other smart features.
