Some luggage manufacturers are still struggling to enter the promising smart luggage segment, but the company that introduced smart bags has just unveiled its second generation of products, Bluesmart Series 2.
On Tuesday, Bluesmart announced a new line of smart bags that includes a carry-on bag, checked bag, laptop bag and a passport pouch. All four products are available for pre-order at Indiegogo.
Bluesmart pioneered smart luggage in 2014. Smart bags contain technology that links them to a smartphone app so that the owner can locate and track them throughout their travel journey. Many smart bags contain other innovative features such as internal digital scales, USB ports and rechargeable batteries. Other luggage manufacturers, including Delsey and Samsonite, have launched smart bags with similar features.
The Bluesmart Series 2 line features upgraded technology, new colors and new sizes. This is the first time Bluesmart has offered a checked bag. Its two previous products, the Bluesmart One and the Bluesmart Black Edition, were 22-inch carry-on bags.
Bluesmart Series 2 Product Line
The Bluesmart checked bag is 29 inches and contains several smart features, including GPS tracking, digital auto-locking, distance alerts and a built-in scale so you won’t pack more weight than the airlines allow. The bag is made of reinforced polycarbonate and comes in three colors: silver, charcoal gray and blue moon. Limited orders are currently selling for $325 at Indiegogo, but it will eventually retail for $695.
Bluesmart is also producing a new 22-inch carry-on bag that more closely resembles its previous products. The carry-on is compliant with all airlines and contains similar tech features: GPS tracking, digital auto-locking and distance alerts. Since the carry-on is with you at all times, it also includes a battery to recharge your mobile devices. Like the checked bag, it comes in silver, charcoal gray and blue moon. Travelers can pre-order the carry-on for $295, and it will eventually retail for $595.
In addition to luggage, Bluesmart is getting into other types of bags. A new laptop bag will contain a battery pack to recharge your devices, built-in Bluetooth tracking and distance alerts. The pre-order price is $195, and it will eventually sell for $395. Bluesmart also offers a passport pouch that contains RFID blocking to protect your identity, as well as Bluetooth location tracking, distance alerts and a two-tap phone finder. The passport pouch can be pre-ordered for $95 and will eventually retail for $145.
All four products connect to the Bluesmart app, which is available for Apple and Android devices. The app can be used to track your bag’s location, get notified if you leave it behind and monitor battery levels. Bluesmart also provides destination information as well as alerts about your upcoming trips, such as gate changes.
The Series 2 bags will be manufactured this summer and are estimated to start shipping in October. Bluesmart raised more than $600,000 in just one day after launching its Series 2 campaign on Indiegogo.
